Beyond SQL Server Monitoring: Advanced Data Platform Performance Management

Proactive database performance management goes far beyond monitoring a few performance counters. Our experts will conduct a deep dive into how data professionals can use SentryOne to accelerate business value through rapid data delivery, free up time to focus on strategic goals, and sleep better at night knowing the company’s data is flowing at peak performance. This deep-dive workshop is targeted to DBAs, IT managers, DevOps teams, and BI pros who want to investigate the full range of SentryOne capabilities for database performance management across the Microsoft data platform.

Afternoon Workshop Sections:

1:30 pm to 2:30 pm

Real-World Case Study: Push Your App to Enterprise Scale with Advanced SQL Server Features

Presenter: Kevin Kline

You have an OLTP database application that sustains a heavy mixed workload with lots of read and write transactions at the same time that it reports data to a client application. Performance was fine for a long time, but it isn't meeting your needs now that it must scale to much higher workloads. What should you do? In this real-world case study, you’ll learn about a series of technologies that provide unprecedented scalability, including data compression, In-Memory OLTP, and clustered-partitioned columnstore indexes. We will walk you through a chronology of the application and database architecture, its changes over time, and the degree of performance improvement achieved with each new SQL Server feature applied. This session will teach you all about planning and implementing advanced SQL Server performance features and how each one impacts your system performance for applications with 100s or 1000s of concurrent users. Here’s what you’ll learn in this session:

• Learn how to plan, prepare for, and implement advanced features on SQL Servers, including data compression, In-Memory OLTP, and clustered-partitioned columnstore indexes.
• See the performance impact of each of the major feature implementations as they relieve performance bottlenecks.
• Learn about the trade-offs in applying major new features, tips and tricks, and other advice for achieving enterprise scale in your SQL Server applications.

2:30 pm to 2:50 pm

Uncovering Performance Problems Lurking in Your Virtual Environment

Presenter: Andy Yun

Sometimes your performance problems lie beyond your SQL Servers. Our data experts will help you uncover performance problems in your VMware and Windows virtual environment, whether the trouble stems from a host that doesn’t provide sufficient resources, a host server conserving memory by “ballooning,” or other problems that can be tricky to discover.

3:15 pm to 4:15 pm

Boosting Performance of SQL Server Analysis Services

Presenter: Andy Yun

Troubleshooting performance problems with SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) can be a frustrating exercise. Learn time-saving tips for tracking trace events and troubleshooting SSAS bottlenecks for both MDX and Tabular modes. We’ll show you some handy tools for uncovering SSAS performance problems.

4:15 pm to 4:45 pm

Networking and Q & A Session with SentryOne Experts
